The Friends Reunion: Everything you want to know about the Long-Awaited HBO Max Special

Friends‘ introduction song “I’ll be there for you” has now proved that they were telling the truth and they are all here for us!

“The one where they get back together” is a special reunion episode with all the Friends cast stars Matt Le Blanc, Jennifer Anniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer. The episode will premiere on Warner Bros’ streaming service HBO Max on 27 May.

After waiting for a year, the official ‘Friends’ Instagram page which has over 10 Million followers posted a picture of the set with the caption: “That’s a wrap! Could we BE anymore excited!? Friends: The Reunion is coming to @hbomax.”

People anticipated that this episode would be delayed like it did last year because of Covid-19 but later on, 13th April 2021, the “Friends” page posted a teaser with the caption “The one where we get to see our favourites back again together” and gave us the best news that episode will air on 27th May 2021 on HBO MAX.

This came as a shock and surprise to all the Friends fans but the surprise wasn’t over yet, we also got to know that along with the original Friends cast some special guests would be seen. The guest list of the reunion episode was also shared on the official handle and it includes David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai. How crazy is that to see all our loved people in a single frame!

Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, Perry, and Schwimmer will also serve as executive producers on the unscripted special and will receive at least $2.5 million each, according to Variety. They also will be reuniting with Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, executive producer Kevin Bright, and director Ben Winston for this episode.

In an interview last year, David Schwimmer said that he wouldn’t be playing his character Ross but he will be himself and so will be all the other characters, although there is some part he didn’t want to give too much information.

Courtney who is known for her character Monica also spoke about the original cast’s reunion before featuring in the episode, writing: “So the exciting thing is that we’re all going to get back together for the first time, in a room, and actually talk about the show, and it’s going to be on HBO Max, and I’m so excited. “We’re going to have the best time. It’s going to be great. We really haven’t all done that and actually sat there and talked about and reminisced about this incredible experience that we had. It’s gonna be fantastic.”

Also to clear up any confusion, this episode won’t be a new episode of the iconic show but more of a nostalgic show with the cast as they go behind the scenes and share insights into the show.

HBO Max explained in a statement, “Lastly, in order to avoid any misunderstanding about what this special is, we want to make it very clear that this is not a new, original episode of the series. The cast will be appearing as themselves, not as their beloved characters.

But still, all the ‘Friends’ fans are hoping to see them play their iconic characters as well.

Also, Matthew Perry, who played the fan favorite character of Chandler Bing, set the social media abuzz after he shared a picture of himself which he deleted later. Perry, who was one of the last “Friends” co-stars to join social media, shared his first image from the shoot showing him getting ready and wrote in the caption, ‘Seconds before eating a makeup brush‘. Which gave the fans a clear view that they’re shooting. Apart from Matthew, none of the other actors posted or shared any information regarding that.

According to TMZ, The team behind Friends Reunion has also used some original props in its upcoming nostalgic special. These props will include the famous water fountain and also the original set.

Sadly the Indian fans would not be able to watch the episode on May 27 but the company may bring the platform to the country soon.

“If you want to be a strong global player, you have to be strong in Asia-Pacific. In India, we don’t have the scale that we want and where we have to be. In order to get there, the workhorse will be HBO Max,” Gerhard Zeiler, head of international, WarnerMedia had said last September in a fireside chat at the APOS Summit 2020.
